The Giving Tree

10 09 2009

We all could learn a little from the Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. This tree is friends with a boy, it gives the boy a place to play, shelter, and apples. As the boy gets older and older he demands more and more of the tree. He takes its apples, branches, and eventually its trunk until all that the tree has left is its own stump. The little boy comes back after he has taken everything from the tree but the tree is still willing to give- all that it has left.

A Child’s Treasury of Poems

5 08 2009

This is a collection of poems edited by Mark Daniel, It is not a really diverse collection of poems but they are all good. The book isn’t just about the poems though, theĀ paintings are really good. Its got quite a few classics and a few that I have never seen elsewhere. I realized with this book that my favorite poet is Anon.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

If ever there was a book to calm a hyper toddler I think this would be it. I have used this book at nap time on many occasions. What is so cool about this book is that it teaches about colors and animals. If the toddler see an animal right after reading the book they probably will give the animal a color just as the book does. I do recommend Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. to anyone.

Falling Up and Where the Sidewalk Ends

4 07 2009

I have decided to write about Shel Silverstien’s books together. The two that I have read are Falling Up and Where the Sidewalk Ends. He is the best poet ever! Besides Anon, just kidding. I really love his poems because they are so fun and childish. Each poem seems to show a little about the world in a child’s perspective. Even though the poems and pictures are black and white the book is full of color- through his words. My favorite poem is “Sick” in his book Where the Sidewalk Ends. Look it up, you will surly have a laugh!
